Google has partnered with Range Media to launch an intriguing program called AI on Screen.
This initiative aims to fund projects where human filmmakers create short films that address the complex relationship between humanity and artificial intelligence. According to Google, “over the next 18 months, in collaboration with Range, we will commission original narratives from visionary filmmakers that explore this connection.”
Film and Artificial Intelligence
Exploring artificial intelligence in film is not something new; for over a century, filmmakers have been capturing these ideas on the big screen. Classic films like Metropolis from 1927 already attempted to capture the essence of AI. Over time, we have seen iconic characters such as the droids from Star Wars or J.A.R.V.I.S. from Iron Man, which have made us question the interaction between humans and machines.

Additionally, recent films like Her, where Scarlett Johansson voices an artificial intelligence, have brought back the question of how we relate to these digital entities.
The narrative often explores the emotional and ethical dilemmas that arise in coexisting with intelligent machines.
Google seeks stories that resonate deeply on a human level, addressing the emotional and ethical dilemmas that arise when intertwining our lives with intelligent machines. Range Studios, the production division of Range, will provide support in development and production to filmmakers.
Two film projects are already underway: one titled “Sweetwater”, which tells the story of a son who visits his childhood home and discovers a revealing artificial intelligence related to his mother’s inheritance; and another called “Lucid”, which follows a couple trying to escape their reality using a revolutionary dream-sharing device.
Interested filmmakers have the opportunity to pitch project ideas in various genres, from science fiction to dramas and thrillers. Google also intends to turn some of these short productions into feature films.
In addition to this initiative, Google has been expanding its efforts in the field of artificial intelligence, even exploring the recreation of classic films through innovative collaborations, such as the recent partnership with the Las Vegas Sphere.
