Ever wondered how you could transcribe audio in different languages with near-perfect accuracy and without having to pay for a paid service? Whisper is the answer.

OpenAI is a company that has developed several artificial intelligence technologies. Instead of sharing these technologies for free, it has decided to offer them only in exchange for a paid service. However, Stability.ai, a collaborative initiative, has taken up the banner of making these OpenAI technologies open source. OpenAI, for its part, has decided to give away Whisper, one of its artificial intelligence technologies, as open source, i.e. available to all for free. This has been done for the benefit of all users.

Whisper could be used to transcribe many of the audios on YouTube and provide a new source of data to train future language models.

What is most impressive about Whisper? For many, the most impressive thing is its ability to understand context and transcribe audio so accurately. This is the enormous value of a tool like Whisper and what makes it so interesting.

While Whisper is not perfect, it is a solid and mature tool that offers a quality alternative to any other free text transcription and translation option. Sometimes some words are wrong and it doesn’t cover all the world’s languages, and it is not yet capable of real-time audio processing (although we already have Whisper-based solutions that do on your PC or Mac). However, these limitations do not detract from Whisper’s value. A real gift to the community that will make many common tasks easier.

Usage applications

Whisper is a tool that can be used to transcribe audio in different languages with high accuracy and to obtain a new source of data for training language models. Some specific ways in which Whisper could be used include:

  • Transcribing audio from lectures, talks or interviews and obtaining text for further analysis or publication.
  • Transcribe audio from YouTube videos and use the text to create captions or to analyze video content.
  • Transcribe audio from phone calls or meetings and obtain a written record for later review or analysis.
  • Transcribe audio from radio shows or podcasts and create a transcript for later publication or analysis.
