Perplexity is an AI search engine: you ask a question in plain English and it's built to answer with the sources it used, cited right in the text. Is Perplexity free? Yes, there's a $0 plan for limited daily use, but plan on creating an account, because without one not a single one of my questions got an answer. Perplexity Pro costs $20 a month and Max costs $200 a month. For companies, Enterprise Pro is $34 per seat a month, billed annually.

The short version of my advice: make a free account, use it for a couple of weeks, and only pay for Pro if you keep hitting the limit or you want to choose the AI model yourself. Max is for people who'd live in Perplexity all day. Here's the longer version.

What Perplexity is, and how it differs from a regular chatbot

A regular AI chatbot answers from what it learned during training and looks things up on the web when it needs to. Perplexity turns that around: search is the starting point. The home page is basically a search box under the question "What do you want to know?", with Search and Computer modes along its bottom edge and a Model menu on the right.

The promise is in one line that appears on every plan, the free one included: "Citations in every answer". According to Perplexity, those citations sit inline, so each claim points to the page it came from. That's the whole reason to use it over a general assistant. When the answer lives on the web and changes often (news, prices, product specs, "what's the latest on…"), an answer with its sources attached is worth more than a nicely written one you can't check.

Where it's less of a fit is everything that isn't really a search. For writing, brainstorming or working through your own long documents, I'd reach for a general assistant like ChatGPT or Claude. Different tools, different jobs.

Computer: the part Perplexity is pushing now

The second card on the home page is the newer one: "Get work done with Computer", tagged NEW, with the line "Hand off your projects to get polished, reliable deliverables around the clock." In plain English, Computer is Perplexity's step from answering to doing, closer to an AI agent like Manus than to a search engine.

It's also what separates the plans the most. According to the pricing page, Free doesn't include Computer, Pro gets "expanded Computer access" plus 4,000 bonus credits, and Max gets "maximum Computer usage" with 10,000 credits every month on top of 35,000 bonus credits. The pricing page doesn't say how many credits a typical job uses, so if Computer is why you're paying, watch your balance on your first few projects before you move up a plan.

What happened when I tried it without an account

Sorry to start with bad news. I opened perplexity.ai in a browser set to US English, didn't sign in, and asked real questions: which US federal holidays are still left this year and which fall on a Monday, how tall Denali is and when it was last measured, and the weekend forecast for Chicago. I asked the holidays one a second time to get the screenshot.

All four ended the same way. The page showed that it had researched for a few seconds, and then the whole answer was one line: "Sign up and repeat your request." No sources, no answer. Twice a full-screen window appeared on top, "Sign in to continue using Perplexity", with Google, Apple, email or single sign-on. When there was no window, a bar at the bottom reminded me that signing in saves your history.

I can't tell you the exact rule behind it; it may depend on the browser, the network or simply the day. What I can tell you is what to do about it: create the free account before you decide whether Perplexity is any good. It costs nothing, the free plan on the pricing page is the one you'll be on, and it's the fair way to test it. Everything I say here about answers and citations comes from Perplexity's own plan descriptions, and you can check it on your very first question once you're signed in.

Perplexity pricing: Free, Pro, Max and Enterprise

Here are the plans as the pricing page shows them, in US dollars. The individual plans are monthly; the Enterprise plans are per seat, per month, billed annually.

The comparison table under the cards fills in the gaps. On Free, answers from the web, file uploads and asset generation are all marked "Limited", and video generation isn't there at all. Pro has all of them. Max marks web answers, uploads and assets as "10x" and video as "5x", and it's the only individual plan with two features called Model Council and Brain. The FAQ says Max includes "several Model Council runs per month" and calls it the plan for "heavy, sustained work".

On models, the FAQ says Perplexity picks the best one for each question from several, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude and NVIDIA Nemotron. Pro and Max let you choose a preferred model yourself; Free doesn't. For companies there's a third Enterprise option with custom pricing, for extra security and governance.

Is Perplexity free?

Yes, with two catches. The first is the one from my test: in practice, you'll want an account, because without it you may get a sign-up request instead of an answer. The second is the limit. The Free card only says "Good for limited daily usage" and "Better for simple questions", with no number, so you'll find the ceiling by hitting it.

That's the plan's own pitch: simple questions, limited daily use, the kind you'd otherwise type into a search box. If Perplexity becomes your default search and you start running into the limit, that's the moment to look at Pro.

Is Perplexity Pro worth $20?

For regular users, yes. Pro is where the "Limited" labels in the comparison table disappear: you get deep research, you can pick the model instead of letting Perplexity choose, and you get Computer access, 4,000 bonus credits, video generation and connections to your apps. Twenty dollars a month is what a lot of people already pay for one AI subscription, so the real question is which tool you'd open every day. If your day is mostly questions that need sources, Pro is the $20 I'd look at first. If your day is mostly writing, it isn't.

Max is a different story. At $200 a month, ten times Pro, it only makes sense if Computer is doing real work for you every day or you need the highest limits for research. For almost everyone else, Pro covers it.

Who it's for, and who should skip it

It's a good fit if you look things up all day and care where the answer comes from: students writing papers, researchers, journalists, analysts, or anyone who's tired of opening ten tabs to answer one question.

Pro is worth a look if you already use the free plan every day and keep running into the limit, or if you want to try several top models without paying for each assistant separately.

Skip it if what you mostly do is write emails, brainstorm or work with your own files. A general assistant is built for that. And if what you want is a finished report or a built project rather than an answer, an agent is the better starting point.

Perplexity or something else?

If you want an all-rounder for chatting and writing, ChatGPT is the one to try. For long documents and careful writing, I'd compare Perplexity against Claude. And if your question is really a task, like "research this and turn it into a report", Manus is built to carry the whole job out on its own, paid in credits.

If what you need is a quick answer you can check, give Perplexity a proper try. Just sign in first.
